I came to know Dewi in the 1980s through his chairmanship of Chellaston Community Association, where I helped him through the process of formally objecting to the then scale of development proposed in the Local Plan at that time. The Community Association was never a political body, but Dewi felt it important to make representations reflecting how the scale would potentially impact on the community, and when a public enquiry came about he took responsibility by presenting objections for the community as a whole in person to the appointed inspector. Various elements of the plan were delayed or scaled down as a result of the enquiry, and one major benefit to emerge was Derby City Council financial support for development of Chellaston Community Centre. The Centre was built in 1988, and possibly would not exist but for Dewi’s efforts.
